More details are now set in place for the upcoming summit in February. The second day of the summit (February 6) will include the following forums and workshops:
1) The Detroit Summer Live Arts Media Project
What happens when young people are treated like criminals everyday at school? How can schools and communities work to transform each other? Why are young people silenced in debates that determine their education? Detroit Summer’s LAMP program is a youth-led education arts and media model, which produced the Hip Hop audio documentary “Rising Up From The Ashes… Chronicles of a Dropout”. Through LAMP, youth in Detroit develop the ideas they have for long-lasting creative solutions to problems in the school system, the city, and their lives, and then use art and media to express those ideas and incite dialogue and action throughout the city and beyond.
2) Hip Hop and Education
Hip Hop culture is increasingly being used in classrooms around the U.S. and beyond. This session will expose participants to the world of Hip Hop Education. Learn some of the existing approaches being used and why ther has been so much success in effectively educating young people throuh this popular medium. This session will be facilitated by Shamako Noble (President of Hip Hop Congress).
3) M-1: From the Ghetto to Gaza
Dead Prez member and Hip Hop activist M-1 drops knowledge on his experience in the Palestinian territory of Gaza. He will speak on his interpretation of the conditions on the ground through his eyes.
4) Gender Identity, Gender Expression and Sexual Orientation in Hip Hop
This session will examine issues related to Sexism and Homophobia in Hip Hop culture. What will it take for Hip Hop to address the very real issues of misogyny, hyper-masculinity and homophobia both inside and outside the Hip Hop community?
5) Hip Hop Activism and Social Justice
What is Hip Hop’s role in the broader movement for social change and justice in the United States and beyond? Leaders from the U.S. Social Forum, Allied Media Conference and hip Hop Congress lead a powerful session on this question. This session will also preview the upcoming activities in June 2010 in Detroit held by all three organizations. Internship opportunities to get involved in these major activities will also be discussed as potential options for participants.
6) Hip Hop Element Workshops
DJ Workshop (w/ DJ Graffiti) –> Learn the art of Mixing, scratching, and more
MC Workshop –> Lyricists Unite! Tricks of the MC trade.
Breakdancing Workshop (w/ Bravemonk and the Fifth Element Warriors) –> Enter the world of Breakin’ and see what it takes to be a B-boy or B-girl
Graffiti Workshop –> Learn graf writing without having to run from the cops!
